MONDAY PUZZLE — I’m curious about something: Hand up if you are a newish solver and if revealers tend to help you with the theme.
Today’s puzzle by Trent Evans, who made his New York Times Crossword in 2018, does not have a revealer, so figuring out the theme might make things more challenging. But does the absence of an entry that ties everything together hinder your solve? Or have you not even noticed them?
16A: Was your first thought Lena HORNE? Unfortunately, Ms. Horne doesn’t fit in that four-letter slot, even though she has been featured on the big screen. The answer is OLIN.
21A: It’s funny how people learn things. The reason I knew that TAPIOCA is a “Pudding ingredient from the cassava root” is not because I eat tapioca. It’s because I watched the first season of “Survivor.” (Hi, kids!) I remember the contestant Susan insisting to anyone who would listen that collecting roots, or maybe it was tapioca pearls, to make “tapioooooca” — that O was really drawn out — was going to be the answer to her team’s food shortage problems.
39A: MONEY PIT is still a great entry, even though I’ve moved into a new-to-me house that requires extensive renovations and I sighed audibly when I solved it.
Hi, kids! Back in the day, there was a stand up comedian named George Carlin (1939-2008) who wrote a bit about oxymorons that I feel sums up this theme better than I could. I don’t know if he was the first comedian to do so, but he spent a lot of time looking at the English language, and he was the one I remember pointing out to me the ludicrous aspects of how we put words together (“Jumbo shrimp” comes to mind). Many of his recorded routines are not standards friendly so I can’t post them here, but I highly recommend taking a deep YouTube dive into his performances.
Anyway, Mr. Evans offers us a set of four oxymorons where the pairs of words might not appear to have anything to do with their partners until you are well through the solve. I solved the theme from the top to the bottom, and by the time I got to the third entry, I stopped to stare at the theme until I understood it. And then, as they say, it hit me: The first and second words in each theme phrase are opposites. It’s Opposite Day!
For example, at 17A, “Zombies” are commonly known as “the LIVING DEAD.” The theme entry at 46A, FOUND MISSING, might be a bit tough for a Monday — I believe that the phrase is mostly a Britishism — but I’m betting that at least some Times solvers will know it.
Perhaps some will say this theme is OLD NEWS. Others may say it is AWFUL GOOD. Either is a DEFINITE POSSIBILITY. When I sent in the FINAL DRAFT of this puzzle, I thought it had REAL POTENTIAL, but likely faced EVEN ODDS for acceptance. So I was TERRIBLY PLEASED when I got the good news it would be in The New York Times. NOTHING MUCH beats that feeling. I’m FAR CLOSER to where I’d like to be as a constructor thanks to the expert guidance of Will and his team. This is BITTERSWEET for me since my father, Ron, passed late last year before he was able to see my puzzles published in the Times. GOOD GRIEF, was he a SERIOUSLY FUNNY guy.
I like the challenge of constructing Monday puzzles because it’s HARDLY EASY to make them clean, interesting and accessible to new solvers. ONCE AGAIN, it’s a privilege to have the chance to give you a moment or two of entertainment as you start your week. I hope you enjoy the puzzle. I have a FEW MORE on the way.
Also, I got a puppy since last you heard from me. His name is Donut. He is far more entertaining than any crossword puzzle could hope to be. My kids are trying to make him Instagram famous. Follow him at @mydonutlife if you like.
Almost finished solving but need a bit more help? We’ve got you covered.
Warning: There be spoilers ahead, but subscribers can take a peek at the answer key.
