Dr. Norbert Gleicher, 70, is the founder of the Center For Human Reproduction, a fertility clinic on the Upper East Side. Born in Poland and raised in Vienna, Dr. Gleicher is a pioneer in the field of in vitro fertilization. Last June, the center announced in a medical journal that one of Dr. Gleicher’s patients, at 48 years old, became the oldest woman in the country to successfully give birth using her own egg. He lives on the Upper East Side in an apartment near his clinic.
COFFEE WITHIN REACH I get up between 7 and 8:30. The first thing I see when I open my eyes is an espresso machine, which is right across from my bed. It’s usually the first thing I do, an espresso. Then I get into the shower and that’s a very important roughly half-hour because I call it my meditation time. I wear a jacket and wear jeans. I leave out the tie. I travel a lot so I buy a lot of stuff when I travel. I was indoctrinated by my mother who was impeccably dressed.
EVERYTHING BAGEL EVERY DAY I start in the office with what is called monitoring, which is when patients who are in active cycles come in for blood testing and ultrasounds. The moment I get in to my office my staff brings me an everything bagel with cream cheese and the coffee. Every day we have in the waiting room very good bagels with cream cheese.
ALL IN THE TIMING At 10 o’clock we start the routine, procedures such as I.V.F. retrievals, I.V.F. transfers. Usually there are one or two urgent appointments. Things really should be done at the best possible time, and if that is your practice philosophy then you have to work every day. Timing is of crucial importance. As women get older, the processes inside the ovaries speed up. If we wait to take out their eggs, we get what I jokingly call hard-boiled eggs. They will not give us good embryos and they will not give us pregnancies. We have a saying that complications happen late on Friday afternoon and on the weekend.
LUNCH WITH THE LADIES By that time I’m usually hungry and I grab a bite, frequently at Le Charlot. On rare occasion I may do it by myself but more often I do it with my eight-year long companion, Lyka, or with one or both of my daughters, Anja and Daliah, if they are in town. They both love to eat with me, otherwise I wouldn’t see them. I have to take them to a good restaurant. Dahlia is in college in Scotland and has the food Instagram with 80,000 plus followers and Anja is the exercise fanatic, she also loves food, and she’s in law school in Philadelphia.
AFTERNOON AT THE MUSEUM I love beautiful things. I have a ton of art that I have bought over the years but I have never perceived myself as a collector because collectors buy systematically. I buy when I see something and think I have to have this. I go to museums because I can’t afford those things. It’s that “aha” moment that I enjoy so much. Suddenly that one painting that somehow moves you. That’s the purpose.
FASHION ADVICE If my kids are here then sometimes they want me to go shopping with them, which may sound crazy but, yeah, the old dad goes sometimes with my daughters shopping. They go a lot to Bloomingdale’s, Zara and Urban Outfitters. I don’t tell them what to buy but they ask me what to buy. When they were younger I was always there, but it’s interesting that even now they sometimes ask me to come or they send me pictures.
SERVICE THINGS Once in a while you have to do what I call certain service things and my only time is on the weekends. Once a month it’s getting a haircut in a Japanese salon on 55th Street and I might get a pedicure and a good foot massage.
LASAGNA DAY Sunday is one of my favorite nights at Elio’s. I eat between 6 and 8 but if you want to find a spot you better come earlier. The moment I walk in I am getting my single malt. If I am sitting at the bar, Bryan, the bartender, doesn’t even ask. If I’m at the table I have to order it because some of the waiters still don’t know. Sunday and Monday are their lasagna days and they make the best lasagna, a classic Bolognese in the Venetian style runny, and soft.
CIGAR AND ESPRESSO I usually drive home. I drive a Porsche SUV. Red. I had to fight for it. I drive up to Le Charlot where I smoke my one cigar at night. And the guys from Le Charlot bring me another espresso into the car. Then it’s bedtime. I watch the news while reading the papers. I’m a newspaper addict. I read them when I am in bed at night, any time from 11 p.m. to 2 in the morning.B:
